Showstoppers Dance Camp

We packed up and headed out a few weeks ago for MariAustin's first experience at a dance convention. It was a long weekend filled with about 8 hours of dancing for a little girl, but honestly nothing could have made her happier. I even tried to talk her into skipping a class once, just to get a rest break after her 30 minutes of lunch.....the girl would not have it!

The purpose of the convention was to experience classes under a new group of teachers. The instructors were all great including dancers from Broadway, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Broadway and MariAustin's favorite a Rockette!

Of course, we tried to make a little time for fun with the family. We headed out for an evening at Broadway. Despite the cold, we had a little fun!

MariAustin was treated to a little pampering and Ella--being such a good sport all weekend, got a new Build-a-Bear.

Take My Dreams and Give Them Wings

Dear Family and Friends,

What a truly amazing God we have! We serve a God who loves us and had a plan for our lives from creation. Erskine and I are realizing God has been working in and building our lives towards that purpose for many years now. We also believe July 19 will be a giant step towards that purpose as we head to Karima, Kenya for a 10-day mission trip.

When Erskine and I met almost 17 years ago, we saw a future for us that involved a beautiful house in the country, a family full of happy, healthy children, and successful jobs. Of course, another vision for our marriage ten years ago, included loving God, going to church, being good, and in doing so we naively believed, God would bless us and make us happy....which truely he did!

Seventeen years ago, I never saw our future putting us both on a plane heading across the Atlantic, to a country we know nothing about, to a country that is home to people that most in our world would consider “hard to look at.” But the truth is, God is working in us a desire to live intentionally and with a purpose that is in line with His purpose. He is revealing to us that we have spent our lives in the church but not being the church. We were reading God’s word, but not living his word. Luke 12:48 says, “from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” We have been given so much, truly blessed beyond measure-- so, you see, we were being good, but were we being radical?

We have no desire to leave our children behind for ten days heading off to an unknown, but this adventure is about a command. We have been called to go! We have not been asked, but commanded to go. And that is why I write this blog. The cost of this journey is, well, it’s really unknown, because the truth--- is our hearts tell us, “This isn’t it.” Our hearts tell us,” This is just the beginning!” While, we know the $7000 price tag that hangs on this trip is daunting, we are trusting that God’s mighty power will make this happen. I'm writing this in the hopes that you will read this and see a small glimpse of what God is doing inside of our hearts. The passion He is building to help those he has commanded us to help; the broken, the oppressed, the hungry, the naked. I encourage you to read Isaiah 58! It is amazing!

We need your help! There are those called to go, those called to pray, and those called to give. Every ounce of my heart is telling us to go! We hope that each of you may find a way to support this journey alongside us. We ask you to begin praying now: prayer for the hearts of God’s children in Karima; prayer for the work that will be done to bring God’s light to their community; prayer for God to continue working in our hearts and for His will to be done. We know that these prayers are essential! Psalm 37:4 tells us He will grant the desires of our heart. Oh how our hearts yearn to do His will and to set the world on fire! If you feel led to contribute by praying or financially, no matter the amount, it would be greatly appreciated. Each and every prayer will be heard and each and every dollar will be blessed and becomes a part of the whole.

A journey such as this was not an easy commitment as parents to make, but we know God will see us through. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Those words fill us with all the confidence we need!

Christmas Celebration 2011

Christmas 2012 has been ....eventful for the Adair's! It was a sweet time with many church events and Christmas story readings. It was fun with lots of family get-togethers. It was exciting with Jack's first year of understanding opening a gift a little more. It was priceless to see the kids amazement as they ventured in to see all of Santa's surprises. And well, even more excitement....later to come.

A visit with B for Christmas. She was excited for the kids to see her tree and all of her beautiful silver ornaments!

The Adair family get-together at the Ramages. All of the kids wore their light up necklaces for the hay ride. It was hard to believe the weather was nice enough for them to play outside all evening!

After a morning of Santa and family Christmas, we headed off to church and then lunch at Nanny and Papa's.

The kids were super hyped by now. We knew going into this day that it was going to be a long one!

Nanny and Papa surprised us all with an IPad. We had no idea and had not even asked for one. Lots of the kids in MariAustin's class were asking for them, and I had explained to her that she was not ready for that type of item.....so when we opened it, she beamed from one ear to the other. We have had to explain...It's not yours, its the family's! But, having said that, I must admit, I have had to ask her several times for help with the thing! How do these kids just instinctly know this stuff!? We have really enjoyed it and were super surprised!

So after an already full day, we headed over to the Coats side. We had a terrific meal (thanks mom!) and then settled in for an evening of more presents. All of the kids got matching pj's from "Uncle"

The evening was just beginning to wind down....when we saw it happen, but it was just too late...Jack went over to the wood stove and touched the front of it....and yes a beautiful, hot fire was burning! We all reacted immediately and it took him about 2 seconds to realize, but his hand was already in pain. I have never heard a child scream so hard for so long. It was just awful! After about 45 minutes, we were finally able to settle him long enough to follow the nurses insturctions and get it wrapped. The poor thing just did not understand. We headed home, not even finishing grandmam's part of the gifts and knew we were in for a long night. Thank goodness Jack was exhausted from the long day and finally drifted off to sleep.

This was his picture the next morning. Bless his heart! But children are so resilient! A week later as I write this, he has just handled it like a little champ and sure does NOT let it stop him from doing anything he wants!

Excitement Part 2: As New Year's moved closer, Ella discovered a loose tooth that she did not let rest. She wiggled and wiggled until New Years Eve, she was ready for it to come out. This being her first one she was super excited and ready to get her name added to the "tooth chart" at school. Please understand this is major stuff to a 5 year old! We pulled out the tooth pillow and prepared for a visit from the tooth fairy!

New Year's Day brought on a Church Service, lunch at Grandmama's and Dinner at Nanny's. We invited everyone back to our house for a campfire, smores an an evening of playing on Santa's big gift to the girls. A Playset!

It has 3 towers on it connecting to each other with tunnels and a swinging bridge. Each child has claimed their territory and are preparing signs for each tower. Oh, what fun summer days are ahead of us! Thanks Santa!

As I close what should have been the last entry of 2011, but is really the first of 2012 (oh well), I have to reflect on the pictures above. Wow, what blessings! I am so truly blessed! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

"A time to Play"

...or a time for a play. Our Sunday School class produces the children's Christmas play each year. This was our third year of the performance. Wow...it's always a huge undertaking with over 75 children ranging from 2 year olds to 6th graders-however, it is such a blessing to see them pull it off every year. Since I am always running around with the craziness of it all, I didn't get any pictures of my own children, however, one lady was kind enough to share with me what she had. Thanks Mrs. Gale!

This was Samuel's first year. He was a sheep. He was so proud of his part. I loved hearing him sing "Go Tell it on the Mountain." "ev-re-WAAAA..ere"

Ella was super excited to FINALLY graduate to an angel...she was so over the whole sheep thing!

..not sure what I was doing...probably running through the list that was a mile-long in my head!

The angels...well part of them, we had about 20 of them! They were beautiful when they were all out with there full wings!

The crew!...Thanks to my husband whom I bossed around for a bout 6 weeks! Bless his heart for being a good man!

The final song was my favorite of everything we have done in the 3 years. All of the children involved (with the exception of the 2 and 3 year olds) were on stage performing the Aaron Jeffrey song, "He Is." To see this part come together (we have been rehearsing since October) was amazing! Yes.....I'll admit...there were tears. :) It was beautiful!

"A Time for Cooking"

There is always opportunity for new traditions! Mom decided it was time to start one with all of the cousins and "moms." We called it "Cookies and Caroling"

Everyone gathered for a morning of cookie cutting, baking, and decorating. What fun the girls had, while the boys quickly got over the fun and returned to their cars.

Once we completed all of the cookies (and the little ones had nap-time), we made several plates and headed out for an afternoon of visiting and caroling. Our stops included Great-grandma B, Great-Great Aunt Frances, Great-Great Aunt Lovelace and Uncle George, and Great-Great Aunt Mari (MariAustin's name-sake). What a joy to visit with each of them. Who knows if they braved the cookies, but a day of fun was spent with family and its the precious moments such as these that make a family! Thanks Mom for the memories made yesterday and many more to come!

The first weekend of December marks parade time! The girls were in the Clinton Parade this year for Dance South. This year they were "Who-ville" characters. We had such a fun time doing their hair!

Ella's hair was barely holding on by the time she reached us....needless to say by the end, it did not!

Aunt Liney, Uncle John and Samuel were on our church float. Samuel was super excited!

This marks the beginning of our Christmas Season....a month of joy, family, giving, and celebration!

Thanksgiving brought a day full of family....and smiles. It has become tradition to eat a traditional Thanksgiving lunch and then set out for family photos. Then, we download them and order Christmas cards that afternoon all amongst searching the papers for our shopping route the next morning. There is chaos, whining, pouting, silliness, attitudes, laughing, frustration, which all leads to naptime (for the men and children), but I LOVE this day and have come to treasure it. It is my most favorite day of the year!

Thanksgiving means its Pow-wow time at Laurens Acadmey. This year, Ella as a 5K studied and dressed as a Najavo Indian.

The class sang a few songs with lyrics all about the indian group and what makes them unique from the other groups. My favorite was the song we know as "I have decided to follow Jesus" in the Najavo language. It was so sweet to hear their little voices singing it.

Of course all pow-wows include a meal . These were their placemats. The meal was venison, turkey, roast, corn, hushpuppies, and nuts.

This is the smile of I'm having fun, but also....I'm now out of school for 9 whole days. She had counted this up and was super excited!

I took this picture last week while the girls were playing outside. As I looked back through them, I was astonished at how much my baby girl has grown up! It's hard for me even to think it.

I'm also reminded of her conversation with me just last night.

Ella: "Mom, I want to go live with grandmama."

Me: "Why Ella?, your home is with us."

Ella: "Cause we have a lot of kids and she doesn't have much people."

With tears now in my eyes, I don't really have any words for her. But my heart is realizing this little girl has a huge heart and she is growing up!

Yes, my home-made cake. I don't know why, but it has become my mission to create all of my kids cakes. I torture myself with it every year, but I just love how the girls look at them proudly among their friends and say, "My mommy made it!" I guess for a moment I feel like "Martha Stewart." I'm just all about a home-made party in every entity! It brings a little bit of the "old" ways back.

...and it's present time! She had a great time and received so many nice things that she is totally in to!..Crafts and Projects!

Happy Birthday my sweet girl! You are so deserving of everything great that comes your way. Your heart is the most sweet and pure I have ever known. You are not only smart and talented, but a kind, caring, and considerate child of God. I know God holds plans for you and my prayer everyday is that I will be the mother He wants me to be to raise you up to your purpose in life. I pray that you will hold true to the girl you know how to be and do not conform to the ways of this world. You know God and He will guide you. I love you May May!

Dancing in the streets is exactly what she did! MariAustin's group performed at the Clinton Fall Festival the Saturday before Halloween. It was freezing cold, but they managed to make it through the routine. Of course, the cold only fazed those of us watching. She would never admit it was cold if dancing was involved!

She smiles the entire time she is dancing. I love that she not only loves to dance, but also perform!

...and of course, we had to partake in the fun!

Yes, it makes me sad that they are getting a little to big for these rides....but they don't see that! They still find fun in it!

We have a certain little boy in our house that loves to go. Okay...either male in our house that you guessed would have been a correct answer! The BIG one and the LITTLE one are adventure bounde all of the time.

Jack has quickly learned that you need shoes on to go outside, so he gets your shoes and brings them to you saying "Go, Go, Go!"

Now that we are a family of 5 going in daddy's favorite toy is not an option for all of us! So I stayed behind to capture the moment.

After months of driving Jack around the yard over and over, I finally agreed to putting his car seat in the jeep for a real road trip. Jack was TOTALLY in heaven!!!

.....I mean Saturday night! The hurricane was heading towards our coast and LA was scheduled to play James Island, so the first home game was moved to Saturday night at 6....not the usual Friday night atmosphere, but it didn't hold back my little cadets!

School has started and the girls are doing fantastic! They both love their teachers and are happy to be back with all of their friends. But just because school is back in gear, doesn't mean our schedules are slowing...here's a peak at some of our fun!

Ella had a tea party birthday party for one of her friens. She had a wonderful time getting all dressed up and heading out to do her "own" thing without her older sister leading the way.

MariAustin's dance company had a performance last week. They are heading to their first competition in January, so are busy with little performances around town preparing them for the audience. She of course loves this opportunity and eats up every minute of it! she has such a great group of girls in her class. I'm so glad they get along so well...such sweet girls!

Erskine and I love some action on the water....I don't know why or how, but adverture sure runs in our blood. We love to see new places and experience new things.

Last weekend, we went down the French Broad River. It was great to share it with some great friends from church. Lots of laughs!!!

So, while I have the opportunity to place it in writing.....here goes! I'm not one for a "Bucket List," but before I leave this world, I hope I have the opportunity to visit (and cross my fingers....raft) the Zambezi River in South Africa with the view of Victoria Falls. Absolutely breath-taking. I can honestly say, nothing I have ever seen in pictures has wowed me before, but this waterfall is one of the 7 natural wonders and there are no words to describe this thing. The river is Class V and WILD doesn't do it justice. So, next year is my 10 year anniversary and I am dropping my hint honey!

Last week, my car finally got on my nerves....I mean I tackled that big machine with everything I had. I emptied every nook and cranny dumping it all into a huge tote ...I'm talking glove compartment, center console, door pockets, the whole thing! I then vacumned it, wiped everything down, washed all of the car seats, stripping the covers and throwing them in the washer......ahhhh....so much better. It was a moment ok..--well more like an afternoon--but it was so worth it.

Amongst the disaster area, I found MariAustin's journal from school. I began flipping through it and I was so impressed. I just loved her work. It was like a little tucked away surprise! I had no idea she had been working on it. I took pictures of a few of my favorites. I hope they show up well enough.

4-11-11 Last week was spring brak AND I WENT TO DISNY WORLD! I had so moch fun! And een one dayI had a popsikle for lunch and nuthing ells! I went on rollercosters! my faveret thing was tawer of tare! you drop 40 feet!

5-24-11 Once-a-pona-time I was stranded on a ilind all by myself. I made my on games and toy but I wasent lonly I had sea frinds! The sharks protedid me, seaguls brolt me food, fish alwas gave me a jumping show & Whels sung me a lulabi at night. Thin a helacopter came and took me back to my family. I did not whont to go but I did.

I just had the best time reading through an entire school year worth of writing. It was really neat to see how it progressed and how her creativity grew. The last one is a favorite! I just that her little imagination can now be captured in her writing!

Ella's 5 Year Special Birthday Trip

It's about "Two"-on-One time....It's about Experiences...It's about Making Memories that will last Forever!

It's the Special Birthday Trip!

E and I decided years ago, we would opt out of a birthday party for the kids every-other year and plan a birthday trip! There were two requirements: it had to be a surprise and it had to be something they had been "wishing" to do or something that related to an "interest" of theirs. We agreed enough of buying toys, or the latest gadget they already have too much of...use the money or moments that we hope they will appreciate and remember for years to come.

So far, the plan has been a success and the girls eagerly await each trip year and weeks leading to their birthday, they continuosly ask, is it time. We love it!

Well, Ella's 5 year birthday brought on her trip year. We had a difficult time finding a trip venue for her because she is so well-rounded, there is no one specific thing shes into....other than adventure! the problem is adventure trips are for 8 year olds...not 5 year olds.

But we finally decided on something and picked her up from Sunday School to surprise her...she had no idea! We started driving to our first destination...its always hard to decide who is more excited...the kid or the parents????

Destination one was a picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville. Ella loves a good picnic!

We finished lunch and headed on towards the mountains. Our next surprise was tubing down the river. We would have loved to tke her rafting, but she just wasnt quite old enough. This, however, was quite adventuous coming from a gal who goes white water rafting quite often. The water was freezing....but Ella loved it!

After we collected hand fulls of rocks out of the river for our little rock collector, we cleaned up for dinner. We headed out to Paula Deens Kitchen! ummmmm....ummmmm!

And one more stroll in the water!

The next morning, we headed over to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. We had another surprise for Ella, but we had to waste a little time. She got to see the BIG rapids or "rapples" as she called them compared to the ones she had experienced the day before.

....And THEN it was time for Surprise #2! Horse back riding....a long time wish for this little one! She couldn't believe it. We were lucky enough to find a stable very close by (after lots of research) that would allow a 5 year old to ride by themselves and one that E could ride...hmmmm...I won't say anymore about that! :)

She was the first to load up and it was a little hard for me to put my little one and let her go on this horse, but I was so excited for her I tried not to let it get in the way of enjoying it for her.

Ella's horse was named "Shotgun!"

Then, I loaded up on "Shirley!"

We all headed off, with my little girl in front of us...and totally out of my reach!

...And E got "Pearl"....lol!!! He was a little dismayed that Ella got Shotgun...and he got pearl! I just had to laugh. Pearl was struggling.

The ride was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! Beautiful, beautiful views of the mountains and the river running through it! I found my absolute DREAM spot if ever I had the opportunity to build in the mountains. A dream view!

Once we returned (and I was able to stretch back out to a standing position and walk normal...ouch!!) Ella got to feed Shotgun an apple.

We went back to the Nantahala to cool off in the freezing water and watch some more rafters come down.

And then...mountain climbing! She made it to the top by herself!!! Queen of the Mountain!

We got cleaned up ate dinner and then went to surprise number 3! The Unto These Hills outdoor drama in Cherokee. Ella studied indian tribes in 4K and will do so again in 5K. I love (I get this from my mom) to allow the girls to experience what they are learning...it goes hand in hand for reinforcement!

We have a Cherokee ancestory and I have always been fascinated by their story..especially the brave ones who boycotted the Trail of Tears and hid in the mountains to avoid capture--thus forming the Eastern Band of the Cherokee nation...this group is the one my great-great grandmother was a part of.

This play tells the story in an amazing way and I was so glad we were there for Ella to see it. She enjoyed it and actually stayed focused the ENTIRE time....a big feat for her! That says alot!

...and of course whats a trip to the mountains without stopping in for a visit in the teepee?

We had a great time, with surprisingly no problems this time. It went all as planned and very smooth! E and I loved the time with Ella. Its so funny how they are so not used to getting whatever and doing whatever they want...making all of the choices (other than what we planed). It takes them a little bit to get used to it, but Oh how they get so spoiled so quickly. It is so neat...and then its back to reality--which they transisition to pretty easy and with a smile....nothing left but the memories of being an "only" child for a few days..and of course looking forward to the next time!

Ella turned the big 5 this year! Man, it just doesn't seem so...she's supposed to be my baby girl. BUT as much as I don't like to admit it, she is growing up. Becuase of a choatic few weeks around her birthday, it was celebrated in three parts (not upsetting to her!)

Part 1- Celebration at Nanny's and Papa's

Part 2- Special Birthday Trip with mom and dad

Part 3- Celebration at Grandmama's

Ella had asked her Nanny months ago to make her a birthday cake. While I don't exactly remember, I'm almost positive this request came during someone else's birthday. (typical middle child)

The cake soon turned into a pink princess cake. She loved it and was super excited about it.

Everyone had a fun time celebrating and noone more than Jack. He took advantage of the opportunity to have a little ice-cream. The child LOVES ice cream! Once you hand over the cone, there is no getting it back until it is gone....and I mean the boy can put away an entire cone!

......and yes, he is bruised all over his face.....he pulls up on EVERYTHING and of course takes tumbles and bless his heart, it shows! But what can I say....he's an active, very typical little boy!

And no party would be complete without the birthday cha cha song from the cousins....had to include for the record!

Dear Ella,

Well, little girl, you are now 5!!! You have grown and matured so much this past year. Your vocabulary is amazing! You know such big words and expressions...I have no idea where you have absorbed all of this! You are also great at pulling out phrases that I tell you all the time--reversing them back on me at ALL the wrong times...wink, wink! You are so funny! I don't appreciate your humor enough until I am with you one and one and can really take it in, but girl, you keep me laughing!!! You always want to impress....always ready to out-do your older sister and take on any challenge. You have recently been running with us and you have a runners heart--pushing through a little further each time. I can't wait to see where this mentality will take you in the future. I love you girl!

Wow, those are words to a song that are so often taken for granted...even as I typed them, but wow, what meaning! Our freedom is what makes us America, but it is also the blessing from God on this country that make us America. That is the part so often forgotten or so often disregarded. I pray that as a country, we do not pull to far away from Him and that He continues to lay His hand on our country and bless our beloved USA.

After a wonderful day with all of our family we headed out at dark for a fireworks show. Jack was doing well for the first 30 seconds and then, fear, panic, terror struck him. He had no idea what was going on....believe me, for him to drop his bottle, this was major fear!

This look shows it all....bless his heart, this picture breaks my heart!!!

By the end, he finally settled in and was ok but every minute or so, he would fall apart again. He was trying to be big and brave!

Ella loves to do this with me....just as I snap the picture, she makes a pouty face....that's my Ella!

Peace~Love~and Bar-Bra-Q

Well, no one really knows when it began...

No one really knows what it is officially called...

But we do know the man it began with...

Some call him William, some call him Bill, some call him "Jack Adair", some call him Dad, and now, lately some call him Papa---

But I quess you could even call him the BBQ Man!

He's got this bar-b-que thing figured out. He loves to cook (outside) and he and his brother Charles always cooked bar-b-que for the fourth of July. William did the pig and Charles did the hash. But what fun is the fourth if you spend all day cooking? So it was then set to do it the Saturday before and have it ready early....

Well, you see, as it always goes for the Adair men, they always over-plan, over-estimate, and over-buy, so once they cooked, there was enough to eat the night they cooked and on the 4th. They called all the family together to eat at Grandma Cat and Grandpa Jack's house to have a little. I remember Erskine bringing me by to eat while we were dating in high school. Of course, I was a bit uncomfortable, but I learned all too quickly that this was the REAL stuff and you put all of that uncomfortableness to the side when it comes to fixing a plate of this!

And so the story goes that little by little family invited more family; and more family invited distant cousins and then add some neighbors.... and then well, why not include some good friends? And before you know it, the Adair BBQ was born...

We just can't exactly pin-point the date. My guess is somewhere around 8 years since it evolved to the BIG Adair BBQ (more than the family gathering).

So how does this exactly work? Well, I tried to document this year, although in my hasting around, I failed more than I would have wished. But I will try to piece it together with the few pics I did get.

3:45     The fire is started up
4:00     Erskine and his dad get the meat from the cooler and put the pig on
6:00     The "pit crew" begins to arrive (the above pics are shots from throughout the day)

12:30 Lunch is served to the workers....and family-yes, the kids are around all day playing in the fields, the barn, riding bikes and doing whatever (small) tasks we can find for them.

1:00 Boston butts and beef roasts are done...pull the meat...and start up the hash!

2:00 The pig is done...now the chickens halves go on!

4:00 Tents are up...Tables are out...Table cloths go on...

5:00 Add the paper towels, the salt and pepper, set the plates, and plasticware

Somewhere in here we all manage to get back inside to take showers and prepare for everyone to arrive!
The girls had 4th of July fashion toes their Aunt Liney treated them too! They were super excited!

Now, back to my story...
The tradition had become for the annual bbq to be at "Grandma's" house. After she had passed, the family still chose to celebrate at the "homeplace" outside under a tent remembering the "good ole days" and shared plenty of stories about Cat and Jack. Jack had a passion for cooking and they still use many of his receipes. It was a great opportunity to get all of the family and cousins together again.

Erskine and I moved back to Clinton and ~~temporarily~~ (we thought) permanately moved in four years ago. About 18 months ago we decided to make this our "homeplace" and so the bbq has a whole new meaning to us. Remodeling the house has become such a passion for us that we love opening up our home and sharing it with everyone. I love for old family and friends of the Adair's to come through and tell me stories of making blackberry jam on the back porch and having sleepovers with Sara and Polly in their old room, of swinging on the porch swing, or the big rope swing Mr. Adair had put up in the barn. There is just something to the old house ~~(yes, I will confess to calling it the money pit)~~ full of love and life. But there is something else, Erskine loves the time with his dad--to learn the skill and family receipes and that bond that is missing from so many father/son relationships.

About a week before the bar-b-que, MariAustin was working on a sign that said :

Erskine and I have laughed and laughed not only at the spelling of a 7 year old...but where in the world did she come up with the Peace and Love?

But as I ~~worked my hiney off~~ prepared for the upcoming weekend and even went through the weekend the words PEACE and LOVE rang so true! I have such a peace about where I am in my life. There is such peace in knowing this "homeplace" hasn't turned into some old abandoned place with such sadness of forgotten stories. It has new life mixed with old stories that are re-told every year on the last Saturday in June. And amongst all of that peace there is certainly love. A family whose love to cook, and gather (and eat) and share that with great friends brings them back year after year to the "old home place." And while we all work (like dogs) through entire weekend, it would not be possible if Mr. William didn't prepare, invite, fund, and above all have the heart for this thing we still don't know what it's called or when it started.

Jack has discovered his little car and it has been as exciting to him as a teenager getting a car! He knows it is made to go. He immediately grabs the handle when I put it on him and is ready to go!

He also is sure to give you a quick wave bye-bye or "buh-buh" as he says. I just love all of his discoveries!

And of course silly little sister has to jump in the pictures....I had to post this just for her to see one day!

Jack took advantage of all of the bad storms we have been having to help Erskine clean up a tree that had fallen in the backyard. He had his first tractor ride and he absolutely loved it!!!

Anything that involves having him outside is good. When I head towards the door he seriously almost jumps out of my arms! I'm going to have my hands full with this one!

Don't worry, my little man, I'm sure you will have plenty of days to help your dad outside!

Man on man....you are growing up my sweet baby boy!!! It's so hard to believe you are now 9 months old, crawling all over the place, pulling up on anything you can find and eating us out of house and home!!! You are in the 99th percentile or more in every category the doctor measures you in. Your favorite things are ice cream (yes....we sneak you some--how can we not when you squeal/scream every time you see it) and being outside. You can wave bye-bye and you say "da-da" and "goooood." You have fit right into our little family and you are a percious joy in my life!

A little scholar!

The next morning was the Elementary awards program. 1-5 each lined up to tell about their year and receive their awards. I am such a proud mommy...but don't want to appear like I'm bragging. However, I turn my blog into a book each year, so I must document my little "scholar-child's" accomplishments...please bare with me!

They each have their sashes to add pins...notice they fit a little better now that they have grown a little...

MariAustin surprised us all with (and I'm NOT) exaggerating receiving EVERY SINGLE AWARD that was given. It was almost to the point of embarassment for me, but the girl did amazing! I was so tickled!

First (and I'm most proud of) she received the Christian Spirit award that is voted on by her classmates. This is the student (a girl and a boy) that shows daily the characteristics of having a Christian spirit. Then, she received from the art and music teacher, the art award and the music award. For academics, she received highest spelling, highest accelerated reading points, highest comprehension points, and tied with others for highest math average and math facts.

I never anticipated all of that! I am so proud of her though! And I have to add, she has some tough competition in her class. So, it was hard work and determination..especially on the reading points!

Miss Burnett-MariAustin's teacher, was such a pleasure! She has a strong Christian spirit and plants HUGE seeds of good character inside these little childrent. I absolutely adore her!

MariAustin, Wow girl!! I am so proud of you. I was blown away at the end-of-the-year awards! While I know what a smart, precious soul you are, it makes me so proud to know that others see that in you as well. You work so hard everyday to give 100% and always want to please everyone. But, the best part about you is when someone else comes out on top, you always smile and congratulate them and and are genuinely happy for them. I have seen that characteristic in you time and time again throughout this year. That, my sweet girl, is what makes my heart smile. That is the part of you I hope you will always hold on to!

Ella has officially completed 4K and is moving on up to 5K! Always following in her older sister's shadow, she was so excited about her night to shine! This was Ella's night and Ella's night alone....all about Kindergarten!

She walked in so proud! They first performed a few songs they had been working on all year in music!

and of course, they were adorable!

They receive their sash in 4k and it follows them all the way through middle school. Each year, they add a pin and as they get older, they receive reward pins for grades, perfect attendance, etc.

Mommy sure was nervous about sending you off this year for a full day program of kindergarten! You, however, were so excited and nevewere ready for school. You were so ready to be a big girl! You hopped out of the car on your first day and never looked back. You have learned so much! I love hearing your stories and songs and when I am most busy and least expect it, you pop out some amazing facts you have learned. I have been well educated about the trees of the rain forest lately! You have mastered so many skills: counting to 50, tying your shoes, reading short readers, and by the fall, you will be reading like a pro. We are all so proud of you Ella Bella!

First Grade Field Day

First Grade had their field day a week after Ella's. The last 2 weeks of school, I think I was there almost everyday with a program for this group, an awards for this group, presentation by another group. So much going on..but I love seeing what they have been working on all year.

This was so funny! It was a relay race where each child had to dress in oversized clothes and run around the cones.

I was impressed with MariAustin's push-ups....she outdid some of the guys in her class!!!

....And of course popsicles...The best part!

The week of the girls dance recital finally arrived...time to pull out the beautiful costumes, do the hair, the make-up and rehearse.....and rehearse we did-the whole week before the rectial. Ella was so excited to be on the "big stage!" Below are pics from the dress rehearsal nights.

Egyptian Day

Laurens Academy had their Core Knowledge Dress Up Day 2 weeks ago, which is when each elementary grade dresses up like the country they have been studying throughout the year. Each grades focuses on 1 and does an in-depth study and concludes it all with a fun activity and dress up day. MariAustin's class studied Egypt.

We had lots of fun making her costume. Of course, projects like this I get so over-involved....

Cale's class studied Greece. Each grade visited every other grade so they could do presentations. I caught MA while she was in Cale's classroom for a quick pic! Fun Times!

We're ALL Winners at Field Day!

K4 and K5 had field day Friday. I went to cheer one excited little four year old on! I love this child's smile...You can see the excitement all over her little face!

This is Ella had her best friend since the first day of school...Callie

The first event was an obstacle course. Ella loved it....the more challenging...the more fun to her!

She runs the cones with her mouth wide open!

As if once wasn't enough...she asked if she could go again!

She's finally learning to run with her arms rather than swinging them by her side....lol!

This was more like boot camp...push-ups, jumping jacks, jumping on one foot, hula-hoop...and sprint!

It was a very hot and humid morning and as the morning went on...it got even hotter....

...so when popsicle time came, it was the best part of field day!

...and of course, my Ella got purple....just to match her t-shirt!

Training

This was my daily devotion for today and WOW!...it hit me to be sooo true and wanted to share. I have added in my personal thoughts.

I have copied portions of this from Proverbs 31 website:

"The temperature was pushing 100° Fahrenheit on that hot summer evening. Golden sunshine tinted the trees and shadows lengthened, as the lone runner caught my eye. He looked like one of the high school boys on my sons’ wrestling team. But what was he doing running now? With wrestling season still months away, his dedication to training impressed me. Training in-season is common; training off-season, rare. And yet the off-season warriors consistently push themselves to their personal best, out-performing those who begin training in-season.

Readiness characterizes these highly trained athletes. They are ready at a moment’s notice to face the next opponent. Seldom surprised, they move with grace and assurance. Their discipline pays off when needed most.

I’ve watched this same principle lived out in the lives of godly men and women I’ve known. They apply themselves to spiritual training, are committed to learning God’s Word, and pursue a life of faith. Day in and day out, they discipline their minds and hearts to stay in alignment with the truth. They strengthen their devotion to Christ in spite of circumstances. They take false thoughts captive.

Then, when they least expect it, their training is called into action. There’s usually no warning. It’s a phone call. A medical test. An email. In an instant, their “opponent” is raging. Fear, grief and despair threaten. But they aren’t overwhelmed.

Shaken? Maybe. But not devastated.

WOW!
This past 2 years, I have faced events that have shaken me. From losing my father in a terrible unexpected way, to making terrifying education decisions for my children that will truly affect them forever, to a roller coaster of a pregnancy, to financial choices of remodeling a century old home, to just the scariness of this economy. I’ve faced things only a few years ago, I never thought I would face, and "no one gave me a map to navigate the details of these circumstances."

In the darkness of these times, I’ve only had my "training" to hold on to. When everything inside of me wanted to run screaming as far away from my hometown as possible, God’s truth told me He will provide and he will protect. When I wanted to despair that I’d lost my "earthly" father forever, God’s wisdom, "my heavenly father" reminded me that HE will never leave me nor forsake me and HE had a plan for my life...a plan that would prosper me and not harm me. Without "training", I would have ran and the truth is I don't know where I would have ended up.
"Being a woman of faith is easy when life is smooth. It’s easy to love others, be a good steward and make wise decisions when everything is going great. It’s when there’s no warning and a storm hits that we need to be well-trained. No one can do this for us. We are the only ones who can study God’s Word. We are the only ones who can push through a dry season and spend time in prayer. We do this in-season (when circumstances are rough) and off-season (when circumstances are smooth), so that when the battles of life strike, we are ready."

I had to make the decision that I would not run and I would not hide...I have to face the hardships head-on. In loosing my father, I had to continue to put one foot in front of the other and face each new day. In making those education decisions, I had to "break-away" from the "norm" and make decisions that I feel made my family more "christ-like." Do we make sacrifices in order to follow those decisions---yes! Do I feel judged? Yes, but guess what...God is my judge and THAT is what I have to continue to remind myself. Making those financial decisions, I have to constantly pull myself back into reality and say, "Do I really need that...is it an earthly luxury?" Without "training" I would probably succomb to those earthly judges.
Do I train all the time......absolutely NOT! Do I fail time and time again.....ABSOLUTELY! But, each new day is another opportunity to start. I have been reading and studying the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan and I can NOT say enough about this book. It speaks so true to what I believe would change this world if everyone could implement the kind of love Chan speaks of. My prayer is that I can start living more of this life and be a light for others to see that love!

Sunday was Mother's Day and what a great day it was! We spent the morning at church and then on the lake with my side of the family and the evening with Erskine's side. It was a beautiful day! The girls told me first thing that for my gift they were not going to fuss all day....and I can honestly say I don't believe they did! Wow....that in itself made it a fantastic day!

Little Jack had his first boat ride.....it was all well and good until we put on his life jacket-not to fond of that!

The girls made me tons of cards for the day! I have a drawer full of all of the "special" things they make for me....I decided to make pictures of each of them so I would have them journaled. (....is that a word?-lol!)

This card was from all 3 kids. MariAustin created this dress...because "Mommy always wears black." It is true, but maybe I need to work on that if my kids have noticed it....they may start calling me "Johnny Cash!"

This was not for Mothers Day, but it is a song MariAustin wrote and performed for me a few weeks ago...thought it was a good place to include it.

Easter 2011

What a beautiful day Easter Sunday turned out to be. The weather could not have been any better....a perfect day for egg hunts and family pictures....well, so it seemed....you'll see later....

We started off our day with a sunrise service at Leesville Southern Methodist (Erskine's family church) followed by breakfast. Delicious!

All of the children traditionally gather on the front steps for the annual Easter picture....more and more kids!

Jack was not too happy to be out, dressed and expected to smile this early!

The Adair family picture....my how we have grown too! Two new baby boys added to the picture this year!

Following Leesville, we headed to our church for Sunday School, Worship Service and then lunch at my moms! B came for lunch and we were so excited to have her back for a wonderful Easter lunch!

We took advantage of the beautiful weather for some family pictures....it just didn't quite go like we planned... everyone was tired (after lunch)...everyone was ready to be out of their "church" clothes, it was nap time for the Samuel and Jack (and Ella definitely could have used one too.) The following pics are the best we could collect.

Uncle Cale brought the bunny for pictures, but everyone would not cooperate!

....and from here it only got worse...Ella went into some kind of silly performance mode and had fun with making faces..simply because she knew we didn't want her to...the more we said, "no", the more she worked to make a face. I just love it looking back....I had to post several just so I can show her one day what she puts us through on a daily basis!

Easter Egg Hunt Take 2

Leesville Egg Hunt

Saturday morning we headed out for another hunt. This time it was a beautiful day

.....perfect day for an egg hunt!

I'm not sure what Jack is pouting about here...he looks like someone just stole his basket from him...

Ella found the prize egg!

The afternoon was full of all sorts of relay games and partner games. The girls had lots of fun!

I think Ella was on the team that won everytime.

The water balloon toss was not too successful for either girl!

Jack had fun cheering everyone on!

And....after games, the crew headed out for one more hunt for the eggs!

What a beautiful, beautiful day. Erskine actually had some time off work, so it was a fantastic family day! Thank you God for your precious gifts and remind of often to be thankful!

Arise My Love--An Easter Story

MariAustin's class let chapel at their school on Maundy Thursday. They told the Easter story through pictures they each had drawn..1 per "scene" from the story.

MariAustin's picture showed the soldiers arguing over Jesus' clothes at the foot of the cross.

Then, they concluded with an interpretive dance to the song, "Arise, My Love"....a beautiful song that tells the Easter story. It had me in tears by the end. These kids were so serious and passionate about what they were doing....I loved it! THIS is why our kids are in this school....absolutely awesome!

Not a word was heard at the tomb that day.

Just shuffling of soldiers feet as they guarded the grave.

One day, two days, three days had past.

Could it be that Jesus breathed his last?

Could it be that his Father had forsaken him?

Turned his back on his son, dispising our sin.

Oh hell seemed to whisper, "Just forget it, He's dead."

Then the Father looked down to his son and he said..

Arise, My love.

The grave no longer has a hold on you

No more death sting

No more suffering

The Earth trembled and the tomb began to shake, and like lightening from Heaven

Time for Plan B..."An Inside Hunt!"

Last Saturday was the scheduled egg hunt at First Baptist and the morning brought a down pour....so "Plan B" was an inside hunt. The Sunday School rooms and children's wing halls were filled with eggs and the children took off!

Jack was along for the ride...he didn't quite understand all of the commotion and got a little nervous...this was just before his meltdown!

Of course the end of the hunt brought lots of snacks and a visit from the Easter Bunny. The girls took advantage of my being pre-occupied with Jack and fixed their own plates....I wish I had a picture.... Mounds of cookies and cheese puffs!!!!

We then headed off for our picture with the Easter bunny! I can not believe Jack sat here with no fussing! I think he may have been to afraid to even re-act!

So we, I couldn't wait to leave, so we headed out early Friday evening. We thought it would be better to drive through the night with the girls rather than all day Saturday...and that would put us there a day early!!!

Starting out...we are all smiles...

..as we pull into a hotel about an hour outside of Orlando....we are totally exhausted...

Saturday morning, we head out to the hotel...Disney's Cornado Springs Resort

We were greeted by the sweetest people at the hotel...they adorned the girls with loads of buttons and stickers!

We checked in and hit the pool before it was even mid morning!!!! The girls had a blast on the giant water slide!

We met up with all of the cousins at the pool. They had a blast sharing the first swim of the summer!

...and of course where there is dancing...you will find my girls! As we decide to head in for the day...the lifeguards introduce the dj.....uh-oh....we're here for a while longer it looks like!

Playing limbo, dancing, musical spots....and lots of fun games!

Ella won one of the prizes!

Once we finally make it in...we clean up and head out for our first night of fun. Half of the group go to Downtown Disney....we head over to Epcot to start this vacation off right!

.....it's only just begun!!! 6 more days!

At Magic Kingdom....

It's truly a Magical Place!

For a little girl....this castle is magical...It's truly a special thing for every little girl to see...

We started the morning bright and early with every little girls dream...Breakfast with the Princesses....

it was complete with meeting all of them (pics later post with all characters) and of course making special wishes with our wands. Ella was amazed that the lights flickered and the room sparkled as each little girl wished with all of her might....(it was really sweet!)

Then....on to ride the rides.....

Ella discovered holding her hands up on the wild rides...the funny thing was...she never put them down..even when the big drop was all over!

Some of the girls favorites were Small World, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroadand Mickey's Philharmagic (which by the way is a very cute show!)

Ella got pretty good at this game...you can't read the score because of the flash..but she totally beat everyone by a landslide! It's the Buzz Lightyear ride--you ride around, pointing the laser gun and shooting targets....who knew the girl had such aim? We were shocked! I think her daddy will be taking her out for some "real" practice soon!

Of course when it came time for the parade....the girls had the best seats in the park...daddy's shoulder!....and yes, the entire time!

at Disney's Animal Kingdom!

This was a day of the Safari Cruise, and the Lion King Show.

Some of the girls favorites were the River Rapids and It's Tough to Be a Bug.

I personally LOVED Expedition Everest. Ella...however...not so much!

This giraffe crossed the road right in front of our little tour jeep. Pretty cool!

That night we cleaned up and headed back to Magic Kingdom for dinner at The Crystal Palace where we met all of the Winnie the Pooh characters

......Action at Universal Studios!!!

For two little girls that love performing and shows...this was the place for them! It's all about the glitz and glamour adn beind the scenes tours.

Some of their favorites were: Honey I shrunk the kids...

They had a great Little Mermaid show and Erskine loved the Lights, Motor, Action car stunt show!

But I think the all time favorite was the Rockin Roller Coaster and foremost...The Tower of Teror....

My favorite night show was here at Universal. It's called Fantasmic....and of all of the parks, this show was FANTASMIC....incredible!!!! Really makes you feel like you are at Disney...it's the real deal!

Epcot-Imagination...Innovation....and Wonder

We headed back to Epcot...for a day to finish what we started a few days before. The good thing was we already had the big rides out of the way....so plenty of time to enjoy the other half of what Epcot has to offer..The Country Showcase.

This is a really neat section that has about 10 countries they showcase. Each country has shops, restaurants buildings, landmarks and attractions that really help you "imagine" you are truly in the country!

When we arrived in France, of course they had all of the street artist painting and drawing. Ella fell in love with the painted umbrellas and insisted on having one. We waited until the end of the day so we wouldn't have to carry it all day. It was wet when we finally got it, so we couldn't close it. I carried it for a while (Erskine called me Mary Poppins) fearing Ella would bump into someone.... then we finally trusted Ella with it. She was soooo proud!

We ate at the Coral Reef restaurant for dinner. The tables run along the edge of a huge (I think the largest) aquarium where you see sharks, sting rays, etc. while you eat. You even watch scuba divers swim around with the fish! Really cool and talk about dinner entertainment!? The girls got....build your own sundaes for dessert which was of course, a special treat!

One More Day....

Our last day we headed back for one more day of fun at Magic Kingdom.

The girls got Mickey Ice Creams...

I left Erskine with the girls for 10 minutes and this is how I found Ella when I came back.....It only got worse from here! lol!

"The Keen Family"....we called ourselves--laughing that we all had the same shoes so I had to take a picture to remember! While I laugh, I must suggest...this is the only way to go! They worked for rain or shine....walking and water rides! They were so comfy and the girls never once complained....these will be a "re-do!"

Meeting Characters

Every corner you turn....there are characters to meet and greet...the problem is some of these lines are an hour long (Rapunzel was 3 hours!). Never-the-less....meeting all of these characters is a must! We created our own book to collect signatures. This was a fun project getting excited before and then to collect all while we were there!

Our last evening in Disney we headed out to eat at Ohana's....a great atmosphere for families! Great food and service, but served family-style and very family friendly

Ella's famous "knee pose" again!

During dinner they invited all of the children up to form a conga line. They danced around the restaurant several times playing instruments, playing limbo and other "mediteranean-style" games. They of course loved this...no being forced to sit still through dinner while the "adults" finish eating!

We headed back to Magic Kingdom to get MariAustin an umbrella (she finally decided she should have one too!) and to ride a few slow-paced, evening rides.

We headed in for our last night of sleep. The morning would bring time to pack and head out for our long journey home. The girls had a great time and it was so neat to see their expressions every time they experienced something new. As Erskine and I talked on the way home, it was truly the little things that meant so much to them. Its so easy to get overwhelmed with all their is to do and the massive crowds...and I might add...extremely easy to get put out with the rudeness, shoving, and "its all about me" attitudes you encounter from other guests. My word of advice to any others going....just take it slow...let your children decide what it is they want to do. Don't drag them around from 1 end of the park to the other trying to accomplish your best made plans. It's about them and the memories to be made...and some of the sweet comments "Thank you momma for bringing me here," and amazed looks on my girls faces are the memories I shall cherish forever!

Ballerina Girl...

This is Ella's ballet costume. Her class is dancing to that Lionel Richie song. It's so funny to see her so "sweet" looking...she is normally a mess and wild. Ughhh..seeing my girls dressed every year like this just melts my heart! Love me some sweet little tutu's!

This is the mini company group...well part of them anyway. This is MariAustin's first year with this group. She's had such a fun time with this dance--a jazz routine. These costumes are so much fun...it is perfect for the dance!

I just love all of their faces on this! They all have a different look!

Today was a long afternoon of dance pics....Ella had 2 pics and MariAustin had 2....we get to head back Thurs. for 4 more...yeah! No, I love seeing all of the little girls all dressed up...each costume is so unique..and the girls (espcially the little ones..) just love being all dolled up!

This is Ella's jazz costume. They are doing Crocodile Rock--perfect costume for it!

More pics to come...these were just on my phone. Her ballet is my favorite! She actually told me when she brought it home that it just might make me cry! How funny! She knows her mom loves a sweet little girl!
